The Maine Credit Union League, in conjunction with the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF), has activated a safe and secure web site to raise money for the thousands of credit union employees, volunteers and members, as well as the general public, that have been impacted by the overwhelming effects from Hurricane Harvey.
To help immediately, the Maine Credit Union League has activated its online disaster relief system at www.cuaid.coop/maine, to collect contributions for this tragedy. All donations via CUAid will be forwarded to credit union organizations in affected areas to distribute to local relief efforts through the National Credit Union Foundation, a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code so all contributions are tax-deductible.
“We continue to be moved by the pictures and stories coming out of Texas and other parts of the southeast showing the devastation that Hurricane Harvey has caused and continues to. I have reached out to my counterparts in Texas and Louisiana to offer our assistance and support. Listening to their accounts provided an even more first-hand perspective of the impact on lives and property in the region than through television and other sources. They need our help and they need it now. As cooperatives, helping others is part of who credit unions are and the fabric of our mission and philosophy. Maine credit unions are committed to the philosophy of ‘people helping people’, whether those people live across the street or across the country or even the world. The people and communities and Texas and Louisiana need our help and we are launching a statewide fundraising effort among our credit unions and nearly 690,000 members to provide much-needed assistance. Thanks to our partnership with the National Credit Union Foundation, 100% of all contributions will be designated for this cause and will help credit unions, employees and their members immediately, making it possible for those affected to begin the long process of rebuilding what they have lost,” explained Todd Mason, President of the Maine Credit Union League.
Maine’s credit unions have a long history of helping in disasters including raising and contributing thousands in recent years for flooding in Louisiana, tornadoes in the Midwest and Hurricane Sandy, among others. OTIS encourages its members who are able to consider making a contribution to CUAid at this crucial time.
